This scroll was created for the Barony of Bhakail's Fencing Champion in 2002. Congratulations are due Ian, Lord Raven of Tadcaster, the recipient of this scroll!

The design is original; the salamander in his flames in the initial is the emblem of Bhakail. The acanthus borders I did according to the instructions at the Gutenberg School of Scribes in Atenveldt, where I first joined the SCA. The acanthus lessons are lessons 5 through 7 and are derived from the 16th century Göttingen Model Book. Lady Dairine's online lessons are very useful— be sure to check them out!

This is the first scroll I've made for presentation using some period pigments. Not all the pigments are period — the few bright colors I have in period pigments are poisonous and I haven't steeled myself to try them out yet — but the blues are period, as is the black and all the colors in the rapier. Hopefully I will be able to do entire scrolls using period paints!

I would have liked to gild the pole that the acanthus twines around and maybe gild around the salamander to give it a truly "illuminated" look, but time limits prevented me from doing so.
